Spaghetti Supper!

The annual Spaghetti Supper night was a HUGE success this year!  This is a fundraiser with money going towards the Principal's Student Scholarship program.  This fund is used to help support students financially in the area of before/after school programs, sports, school supplies, and field trips.  Thank you to all of the amazing staff members who helped serve the food and to the PTO for organizing the night.

Deb Wood and Lisa Bartlett were instrumental in the success of the night.  They secured donations for most of the supplies which allowed this to be the most profitable Spaghetti supper in memory.  Thank you both for making a difference for all of our students!

Thank you to the MAC for Inspiring our Students!

Sports Legend Talks with Manchester Memorial Students.
MANCHESTER, MA—October 27, 2014. Students at Manchester Memorial School were treated to a presentation by Nick Bollettieri. The world-famous and Hall of Fame tennis coach was here this week visiting Manchester Athletic Club’s MAC Tennis program, where he gave private and group lessons to up-and-coming tennis players from around New England, including those in the MAC Tennis Academy program.

430 students in grades K-5 were treated to a Q&A with the energetic octogenarian who created the first full-time tennis boarding school that combined on-court training with an academic curriculum. A method that produced 10 number-one world-ranked players, including Andre Agassi, Maria Sharapova, and Venus and Serena Williams.

Bollettieri spoke to students about their school’s core values: Honesty, Effort, Acceptance, Respect and Responsibility, and Thoughtfulness (HEART); as well as the importance of education, working hard, and living a healthy lifestyle.

“A positive attitude gives you a chance to be successful and can make the impossible possible”, Bollettieri told students. “If you feel that you are special, you have to prove that you are special. Don’t ever say I can’t, say I will. If you put everything you have—every ounce of effort—into winning, then you are a winner no matter the final score.”

"Nick is a great example to young people of how discipline and hard work can provide opportunities and lead to great success," said John Willis, Principal at Manchester Memorial Elementary School." He has travelled the world motivating young people, and a lot of what he believes in is what we teach our students here."

Bollettieri’s visit was made possible by the MAC Sports Foundation, which was created in 2012 by Manchester Athletic Club in partnership with the United States Tennis Association (USTA). The mission of the Foundation is to offer scholarships to junior athletes who do not have the financial means to reach their goals, as well as to provide grants to schools and community organizations offering youth athletic programs.

Manchester Athletic Club is located in Manchester by-the-Sea, MA, and is the only USTA Training Center in New England and one of only 12 USTA Regional Training Centers in the country. MAC is also home to New England’s professional tennis team, The Boston Lobsters.

Charlotte Rosemary

The children keep asking to see a picture of our new baby girl, so I figured this is the best way to share it.  My wife and I welcomed a little bundle of joy into our home last week with the arrival of our third child, Charlotte Rosemary.  What a magical experience it was to see her for the first time.  Mom, Dad, baby, and big brother/sister are doing great!  Thank you all for your support and well wishes!

A Message from the MERHS Green Team...

Walk to School Day- October 8th
International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October. This year the Green Team encourages all students to either walk or bike to school on October 8th to promote living sustainably.

From my travels...

Today is a coaching day for me at school.  On coaching days, I spend the day working with teachers and students...by far my favorite day of the week!  On my travels, I saw this great bulletin board outside the art room.  It said, "Art is..."  Some ideas of note...

Art is expressive, creative, relaxing!
Art is messy!
Art is creative!  (This was very popular)
Art is a beautiful array of lines, shapes, dots, and colors!
Art is stress free!
Art is a thing where there are no mistakes!

I would say that they "get it!"

Bike Safety!

Thanks to the DPW, MPD, SRTS, MFD, B&P Committee, Seaside Cycles, and especially John Carlson, for pulling together a great bike and pedestrian safety day!  It was great to see  all of the town departments pulling together to make it happen.  The kids had a blast and learned some really great lessons!  I am looking forward to the SRTS construction project and crossing guards (fingers crossed) to make our local area a little more bike/walk friendly.  If you know of any retirees who would be willing to serve as a crossing guard, please contact John Carlson or myself directly.

Again, a big success and THANKS to all who pitched in!

Bike Safety!

On September 4th, the Manchester Bike and Pedestrian Committee in conjunction with the Manchester Police Department is hosting a Bicycle Rodeo/Skills Course and Helmet/Bicycle Check for children ages 5 through 10.  Helmets found unsafe will be exchanged for new helmets, and all others will be adjusted for proper fit.  The bicycle check  will be conducted by Seaside Cycle Technicians, who will also advise parents of any significant mechanical issues.  The event starts at 3:30PM at Manchester Memorial Elementary School on the side by the play structures/library.  In addition to running the bicycle rodeo, Manchester Police will be on hand to answer any questions concerning bicycling in town and Massachusetts bicycle laws.

If your son/daughter  typically ride a bus or car home, they will need to send a note in stating "I give permission for my son/daughter ,”name”, to be dismissed as a walker to attend the after-school bicycling program." - so that school administrations knows that the school can dismiss to the Bike Rodeo/Skills Course and you can drop off his/her bike at the event.

Principal For the Day

My name is Remsen Demeo and I am the Principal for the Day today.  I had a great day at the PTO meeting, observing my teacher, and making some really cool decisions.  One of the best parts was having a hot chocolate to kick off the workday.  Another thing that was cool was wearing a badge that got me in and out of the school building like the teachers!

One of the decisions I made was to have two fun dress up days next week.  Information is below…

Monday, June 16th will be SPORTS DAY!  Everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite sports team jersey or t-shirt to school…even the teachers!
Wednesday, June 18th will be OPPOSITE DAY at school.  This means that the teachers will dress as students and the students will dress up as teachers!

I hope to see all of the kids and staff dressed up next Monday and Wednesday!

Sincerely,

Remsen Demeo
MMES Principal for the Day
